Drumroll please….

31 Oct

I chose today to pick and announce the winner of the MatteStephen’s print giveaway because it’s Halloween and it’s my  birthday!  The big one. I figured what better way to start my 40s than with some good Karma.  Plus, I had won a Parvez Taj piece of artwork recently and figured paying it forward was good policy.

However, because I am not a huge blog with thousands upon thousands of readers yet, the entrant number was limited.  One had to go to the MCML Facebook page and ‘Like’ and also comment on which print you liked the best and why.  We had six entrants, not enough to need to qualify for any official company to do the drawing of course.  I knew half the people personally, so it was tempting to just pick one.

But justice got the better of me and I decided to choose using the very scientific glass bowl method. All six got put in the bowl and I closed my eyes, swirled them around and grabbed one. (Yes, I am this nerdy.)  The Ficks had better odds than most because BOTH entered.  Very very clever.

And the winner is…drumroll please…Andy Pierce!  Congrats, Andy.  Your favorite is the San Francisco print for the reason below:

I love the second San Francisco one with the geometric rocks, the happy little seals and the friendly little cars. It makes me feel warm and fuzzy all over!

Andy will get a 13×19” signed and numbered print and apparently feel warm and fuzzy all over.  Congratulations, Andy!

P.S. Oh yeah, and happy birthday to me.  I just got Chicago and Seattle for the family room!

Weekend Show and Tell

23 Oct

I am not one of those people who starts planning for Christmas in October. I barely plan for Christmas in December. However, I couldn’t resist the charm of these Pantone ornaments. Now that makes for a modern tree.

I don’t know if I want all these mirrors around me while I am doing my business, if you know what I mean, but I have to admire the DIY design of this kind of Alice in Wonderland mirrored room.

Asking what time it is will never be the same with one of these word clocks. How can I resist when it’s all about words?

Because MCM owls have a soft spot in my heart, I can’t help but swoon over this wallpaper. A bit much for my real house, but so darn cute.

And finally, for your Sunday afternoon listening pleasure, Spinning on Air from WNYC features what they call the mid-century modern design music equivalent. You decide, but for me, Miles Davis, George Russell and Elmer Bernstein come pretty darn close.

Matte Stephens Print Giveaway

21 Oct

Seattle. Limited edition 13x19 print by Matte Stephens.

I am grateful to a friend for sharing this artwork with me via ‘Happiness Is…‘ and I think my Seattleite friends and MCM crazies in other cities like Manhattan, Chicago (sigh, have we talked about how much I love Chicago?) London and many others will love it.  Aren’t these gorgeous? I love his tongue-in-cheek sense of humor. (Check out Charles Eames as a Log.) And with the largest (16×20) and most expensive being only $85, this is wonderful affordable MCM art.

Matte’s paintings are done in gouache, which is water soluble like watercolors but opaque rather than transparent. It provides a more vibrant tone than watercolor and gives the painting a velvety texture. The prints he is selling are all limited edition and are signed, numbered and titled.

As you may or may not know, I won a Parvez Taj print yesterday from Grassrootsmodern.  And since I believe that what comes around goes around, I will giveaway a Matte Stephen’s limited edition 13×19 print of your choice if you ‘Like’ the MCML Facebook page and tell me which is your favorite and why on that page’s Matte Stephen’s Giveaway post.  I will announce the winner via this blog on 10/31 for a Happy Halloween.

Winner, winner! Chicken Dinner!

20 Oct

I am not a winner.  That is not to say that I am a loser, just that in contests or giveaways I don’t win much. I am sure part of this has to do with the fact that I don’t enter much either. It reminds me of an old New Yorker cartoon that depicts a man on his knees praying to win the lottery. God is above him with a caption that reads something like ‘If only you’d buy a ticket.” There are a lot of life levels on which we could explore that quote, but let’s leave it at contest entering for now.

That being said, I entered something. And…you guessed it…I won! Part of blogging is being an active member in the blogging community. I subscribe to almost 100 blogs on mid-century modern, modern design, architecture and home improvement to gather information to share with you and to also use as inspiration. My brother turned me on to a great blog called Grassrootsmodern whose mission is:

Grassroots Modern was started to help those who are looking for a modern contemporary style at an affordable price. We hope to be able to connect passionate designers with the masses and become a catalyst for change in the modern contemporary world.

Sounds good, right? Sign me up! And I did sign up. And it was worth it. Great regular information with a more-than-sometimes bend to MCM design, most likely because one of the authors Creede Fitch (ummm…great name) love MCM. (He also has a dog named Ainsley…another great name).

And not only did I sign up for their blog, I also entered the recent contest for a Parvez Taj print. Some of you may remember the Parvez Taj of Shiva that I have hanging in our entry way from the paint-the-inside-of-the-front-door-green post.

I love Parvez Taj’s work. I love the creative range of his media use. I love the exploration of the sacred with a healthy dash of secular overlay. I am gushing now. But I love it. So when Grassrootsmodern introduced a contest to win a print from the Parvez Taj recycled wood collection, I entered. Duh.

Taj has a new series of work done on recycled wood and to enter the contest you had to comment on which you liked best and why. I chose Casa del Herrero.  My comment, left on their Facebook page and website to be doubly sure they saw it, was:

I love it because I grew up near Mexico and it reminds me of all the vibrant colors in the palette of Mexican ceramics.

Easy peasy, right? I entered and promptly forgot about it as our family traveled to NYC this week. (More on that later.) On the plane on the way home (God bless in-flight wifi), I saw a ping-back on the green door post from Grassrootsmodern announcing that I’d won!  Yep, I won a Parvez Taj print of the recycled wood collection.  Wow, right? I am not sure if it’s the one I said I liked best or another, but hey beggers entrants can’t be choosers.

Weekend Show and Tell – Halloween Special

15 Oct

Halloween is a BIG holiday around our house, in party because it’s my birthday. And this year, it’s the big one. 40. Yep, that’s right. Though I hear 40 is the new 20, so maybe it’s a good thing. Getting older has never really bothered me, probably because my birthdays were always so much fun. In the spooky spirit, this Show and Tell features all things scary and strange.

After my Marimekko post earlier this week, I was excited to see this gorgeous Marimekko pumpkin tablecloth.  It’s sold out online but there are still some available at Crate and Barrel.KuminaOrngTableclothF11

Part of the Halloween menageris from Designskool on Etsy, a very cool paper mobile that hangs and floats like an elegant bat.

Royal Bats Perching Decorations

From Design Seeds, a gorgeous harvest palette that just makes me want some apple cider and pumpkin pie.

In East London, the coolest store EVER for Halloween supplies.  Take me there now!

I love these creepy pieces of art from Aleksandra Waliszewska that I saw on the 2modern blog.  I particularly liked this very modern take on Little Miss Muffet.

Waliszewska

For those of you who cringe at the idea of carving and pumpkin guts and rotted gross pumpkins, I love this idea of creating candy pumpkins with paint from Apartment Therapy.

And finally, the ultimate Halloween decor, skull flocked wallpaper that I saw on Remodelista.  Not sure I would want this around all year, but it’s pretty awesome for Halloween!

Everyone have a spooky, scary, groovy Halloween!
